Tax Time Receipts-Paper or Digital?
Some of my clients ask about scanning paper receipts needed for taxes so they can rid themselves of the paper and store thee info digitally. http://www.neat.com/
If you consult your CPA, you may be told that the IRS accepts images as proof. I would only recommend scanning for those who are very organized. If you can’t organize paper you probably won’t organize the images on the computer well which will further complicate your problem. If however you are committed to getting this system in place you should know a few things. The files must be backed up, perhaps in more than one way. Be ready to print out the stored receipts if the IRS demands. Adobe PDF works well and is a format widely used. The actual receipt must be pictured, you can’t simply have it recorded in a spreadsheet.
